Conservative Care Management

What is it?

Not everyone with advanced chronic kidney disease chooses to pursue kidney transplant or dialysis care. With the help of their doctor and care team, a person may choose more conservative care, which focuses on comfort, quality of life, and symptom control.

Is conservative care management right for me?

The decision to start or stop treatment is a personal choice, and you may change your mind at any time. Your clinical team will help you determine what treatment option is best for you.

The goals of conservative care management are:

  • Conserve kidney function as long as possible
  • Manage symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, itching, poor appetite
  • Alleviate pain
  • Support cultural beliefs
  • Provide emotional, spiritual, and psychological support
  • Help with advanced directives and other legal decisions
  • Avoid treatments and hospital stays that may worsen quality of life
  • Provide an end-of-life care plan
